In November 29, Hangzhou Xianna Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd. delivered its perovskite α-tandem modules for the China Three Gorges New Energy 50 MW PV demonstration project, in what is said to mark the first commercial application of four-terminal perovskite-silicon tandem modules in China.
Once the PV power plant utilizing these tandem modules is completed and connected to the local grid, it will significantly alleviate the local grid's supply-demand imbalance, reduce environmental pollution, and improve air quality. The design work for a 500 kW demonstration plant has already been completed, with plans to collaborate with engineering institutes for on-site module layout design. The demonstration plant is expected to be connected to the grid and operational by the end of 2024.
The launch ceremony for the perovskite α-tandem modules was attended by Yao Jizhong, Co-Founder and CEO of Xianna Optoelectronic, and Dr. Liu Dongxue from the China Three Gorges Group. During the event, CEO Yao remarked, “The national launch of Xianna’s four-terminal perovskite tandem module sets a new industry benchmark, marking a significant milestone in our journey of innovation and breakthroughs.”
The perovskite α-tandem modules delivered for this project were jointly developed by Xianna Optoelectronic and the China Three Gorges Group’s Science and Technology Research Institute. These modules are the first four-terminal perovskite-silicon tandem modules available on the market for mass production and practical use. Four-terminal tandem cells boast excellent potential for industrial application, with their primary advantage being the independent manufacturing processes of the top and bottom cells. This eliminates the need for process compatibility or current matching between the two cells and allows seamless integration of perovskite and traditional silicon cell production lines.
Xianna’s α-tandem modules combine the benefits of perovskite and silicon modules, leveraging perovskite’s transparency and stability to achieve spectral matching with silicon during mass production. Built on Xianna’s synergistic efficiency stabilization technology, the modules feature a new stable, transparent electrode process that maximizes solar spectrum utilization. This breakthrough enhances photovoltaic module efficiency, surpassing the efficiency limits of single-junction silicon and perovskite modules.
The successful delivery of Xianna’s four-terminal perovskite tandem modules is expected to accelerate their commercialization, broaden application scenarios for perovskite cells, and pioneer advancements in the industry. As the first company in China to ship four-terminal tandem modules, Xianna remains committed to technological innovation, striving to improve photoelectric conversion efficiency and long-term stability in practical applications. Looking ahead, Xianna will continue to focus on the research, development, and industrialization of perovskite tandem technology, adhering to its synergistic efficiency stabilization philosophy and contributing to achieving carbon neutrality goals.
